YMCA CHELTENHAM is calling on local people to come together and sleep rough for one night in March to support local people experiencing homelessness.

The YMCA Cheltenham Sleep Easy fundraiser will be held at the YMCA Sports Centre, Arle Road on Friday, 6th March 2020. The event will see participants sleep in the sports centre car park for the night to raise awareness of homelessness and vital funds to support our work. Taking part this year are people representing Churches, businesses and the local community including local councillors and MP for Cheltenham, Alex Chalk, who has regularly taken part in Sleep Easy since 2015.

YMCA CHELTENHAM will be linking with many YMCAs across the country creating a combined voice to raise awareness of the many problems surrounding homelessness during national Sleep Easy Week.

Hundreds of supporters are expected to sleep out all over the country raising funds to help YMCA continue to support residents and young people in its services.

YMCA Cheltenham has raised over £60,000 since the launch of Sleep Easy in 2013. The money raised has helped us provide more than 1,600 bed nights every week for those who are homeless or who need a safe, affordable place to stay (over 85,000 bed nights each year).  Every night this winter, YMCA Cheltenham, together with its partners, will be providing a safe place to stay for people who are rough sleeping in Cheltenham.

It is hoped that this year’s co-ordinated fundraising week will help us raise even more funds as the number of people experiencing all forms of homelessness continues to rise and pressures mount on the housing market.

David Wallace, YMCA CHELTENHAM Chief Executive, said:

YMCAs across the country are holding Sleep Easy events at the same time to raise much needed awareness of the plight of those who are rough sleeping, or who do not have safe, suitable accommodation.

We know from our experience over the past 164 years that without the support we offer many more people would be sleeping on the streets and have fewer options and reduced opportunities to realise their potential.

We are calling on the local community, old and young, to sign up to take part in YMCA Cheltenham Sleep Easy to help us to continue to support people in our services today and to extend what we are able to offer in the future. One night can make a lifetime’s difference to someone who is sleeping rough.
